Mai Reet Vomm Järve

(1938-Present)
Born in Tallinn, Estonia

Born on April 18, 1938 in Tallinn, Estonia as second child of artist, Benita Vomm, and sculptor, August Vomm.  Private art lessons at Benita Vomm Art Studio in Caracas, Venezuela; lessons in sculpture and drawing from brother, Ants Vomm.  Member of EKKT since 1960.  Art teacher in Tottenham and Beeton Public Schools for three years in the early 1970’s. Past curator of Estonian Arts Centre art collection in Toronto.  Organizer and co-orindator of many art exhibitions in Beeton, Tottenham and Toronto. Hostess and spokesperson for EKKT at Court of Canadian Citizenship for new Canadians. Co-orindator of juried art exhibition celebrating the 40thAnniversary of Canadian Citizenship in 1987 at the Joseph D. Carrier Galley as well as the Three Generation Family Exhibition, “ Järves and Vomms” (1987). Co-ordinator of EKKT’s 35thAnniversary juried art exhibition at Samuel J. Zacks Gallery, York University in North York.  Public relations manager of EKKT, member of North York Arts Council and Estonian Arts Centre.  Exhibited since 1960 in Toronto, Montreal, Sudbury, Vancouver, Tottenham, Alliston, Beeton, Baltimore, New York, Philadelphia, Caracas, Stockholm and Melbourne. Recipient of 1987 Volunteer Service Award (15 years) from the Ministry of Citizenship and Culture at Roy Thomson Hall. Likes to work in oils, pastel and acrylic in both abstract and realistic styles.

Exhibited at EKKT’s Anniversary Juried Art Exhibition at Samuel J. Zacks Gallery at York University, at Esto’92 Juried Exhibition in New York, and EKKT’s 40thAnniversary Juried Exhibition (1995) at Estonian House Gallery in Toronto.  Organized the “August Vomm & Family” art exhibition in Tallinn, Estonia at A.H. Tammsaare Museum, to commemorate father August Vomm’s 90thbirthday in 1996. Organized the EKKT group exhibition in 1996 at the Kastllaanimaja Gallery with the help of Gallery Director Mr. Elem Treier, who sent EKKT an invitation.  EKKT was the largest non-profit visual art group form Canada and North America to exhibit in newly independent Estonia since 1991. Organized an exhibited at EKKT’s Juried Exhibition entitled “Canada” in 1997.  Co-organized with Odette Kirss from the Rakvere Museum the “Mölder’s & Vomm’s Family Exhibition” at Rakvere Museum, which toured to Narva Art Museum, and Viljandi Art Hall in 1998.  President of the Society of Estonian Artists in Toronto since 1991. Also organized EKKT exhibition “Toronto 200” (1993).  Organized Art Exhibition to celebrate the 80thAnniversary of the Independence of Estonia in 1998.  Member of EKKT 1956-1990 Art Album and EKKT 2000 Art Album Committee.  Works in Estonian National Art Museum, Tallinn, Estonia, Rakvere Museum, Tartu Art Museum, private collections in Canada, China, Estonia, South America and USA.  Interviewed by CFTO-TV at Samuel J. Zacks Gallery October 1990, Tallinnfilm ’90, City TV at Estonian House, 1997.  In newspapers:  Toronto Star, Globe & Mail, Teataja, Vaba Eesti Sona, Vaba Eestlane, Õhtuleht, Päevaleht, Virumaa Teataja, East York Observer, North York News, Sakala. Books:  EKKT 1956-1966 Art Album, EKKT 1956-1990 Art Album, EKKT 1956-2000 Art Album, “The Lady Was a Star” by Carolyn Davis-Fisher (1996) EKABL videofilms, catalogues.  Currently resides in North York, Ontario.

ABOUT US

This website is dedicated to all of the 80,000 (about 10% of the population) emigrés who had to leave their homeland with their families between 1940-1944.

With over 5000 works of art. It has become difficult to find a suitable home for these rich historic artworks. The majority of the works on display and for sale on this website are from Mai Vomm Järve’s collection (predominantly works from the Society of Estonian Artists in Toronto-EKKT members).
